Dry Needling Malaysia: Releasing the Knot, Not Masking It

Some muscle tension does not respond to pressure. You get worked on, it feels better for an afternoon, and by the next morning the same band across your shoulder is back. Trigger point dry needling targets that band directly with a fine filament needle, and it is used at Trinity Chiropractic in Puchong by Dr. Bernice Wong, who holds the GEMt certification for it.

Why Some Knots Come Straight Back

A trigger point is a small, tight band within a muscle that has stopped releasing on its own. It is tender when pressed, it often refers pain somewhere else entirely, and it is the reason a shoulder rub helps for an afternoon and no longer.

The distinguishing feature of a trigger point is referral. Press one in the upper trapezius and the ache frequently appears at the base of the skull rather than under your thumb. Press one in the gluteal muscles and it can travel down the back of the thigh in a way that gets mistaken for sciatica. This is why people so often treat the wrong place for months: the spot that hurts and the spot that is driving it are not the same spot, and no amount of rubbing the sore area addresses the band that is actually generating it.

Manual pressure does work on many of these. Sustained compression, stretching and the soft tissue work already in Trinity’s RM98 session release a great number of them. What dry needling adds is reach and precision for the ones that manual work cannot get to — bands sitting under other muscle, or bands that have been locked long enough that surface pressure simply does not change them.

The honest scope. This treats muscle. It is not a treatment for disc problems, nerve compression, arthritis or any structural spinal condition, and it does not replace the assessment that establishes which of those you actually have. It sits alongside adjustment and rehabilitative exercise as one tool among several, and if your assessment says the problem is not muscular, you will be told that rather than sold a course of it.

Dry needling is not acupuncture

The two get conflated constantly because both use a fine filament needle, and the confusion matters because it leads people to expect the wrong thing. Acupuncture is a practice within Traditional Chinese Medicine, with needles placed at defined points along meridians according to a system that has its own diagnostic logic and its own long history. Dry needling comes out of Western musculoskeletal practice: the needle is placed into a specific taut band that has been located by palpation, with the aim of provoking a local twitch response and letting the band release. Different reasoning, different point selection, different intended outcome — a needle is simply the delivery method both happen to use.

It is called dry needling because nothing is injected. There is no medication, no steroid, no anaesthetic. The needle itself is the entire intervention, which is also why the sensation is different from an injection: a brief cramp or twitch as the band lets go, then usually a noticeable drop in tension.

Where It Is Used Most

Three presentations account for most of the dry needling done at the clinic. All three share a pattern: muscular, persistent, and already resistant to hands.

Dry needling applied to the upper trapezius for shoulder and neck tension
Neck & Shoulder

The band across the top of the shoulder

The upper trapezius and levator scapulae are where desk work concentrates, and they are the most commonly needled muscles in the clinic. Typical picture: a one-sided ache that climbs into the base of the skull by late afternoon, worse on days with more screen time, and unchanged by whatever stretch you found online.

Dry needling of the lumbar and gluteal muscles for lower back tension
Lower Back

Lumbar and gluteal tension

The muscles beside the lumbar spine and the deeper gluteal group hold a great deal of load in anyone who sits for long stretches or lifts badly. Their referral patterns travel into the buttock and down the leg, which is why this is frequently mistaken for a disc problem — and why the assessment comes first, to establish which one you are actually dealing with.

Who does it, and with what

Dr. Bernice Wong holds GEMt Trigger Point Dry Needling certification alongside her BSc (Hons) Chiropractic from IMU University Malaysia, and holds Basic Life Support certification. Needles are sterile, single-use and disposed of after each session. It is never delegated to an assistant.

Needling is almost never used on its own. It releases the band; it does not change the load that produced it, which is what adjustment and prescribed exercise are for. Where the assessment finds a movement fault at a specific spinal segment, the starting point is Gonstead Chiropractic Malaysia instead, and needling supports it rather than substituting for it.

Same Knot, Back Every Week?

Tell us where it sits, how long it has been there, and what has already been tried on it. If the honest answer is that soft tissue work has not been given a fair run yet, that is the cheaper thing to do first and you will be told so.

RM300 first visit including full assessment. RM98 for soft tissue and sports massage sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask before their first dry needling session in Puchong.

The needle going in is usually barely felt — it is a fine filament, far thinner than an injection needle. What you do feel is the twitch response when the band releases: a brief, deep cramp lasting a second or two. Most people describe it as strange rather than painful. Muscle soreness like the day after a hard workout is common for a day or so afterwards.

No, though both use a similar needle. Acupuncture sits within Traditional Chinese Medicine and places needles at defined points along meridians. Dry needling comes from Western musculoskeletal practice and places the needle into a specific taut band found by palpation, to provoke a local twitch and release it. Different reasoning, different point selection, different intended result.

Nothing — that is exactly what “dry” means. No medication, no steroid, no anaesthetic. The needle itself is the whole intervention. Needles are sterile, single-use, and disposed of after each session.

Many people feel a change in tension immediately after the first session, though it commonly takes a few before the change holds. What matters more than the count is the review point: if there has been no meaningful difference after a small number of sessions, the right response is to re-examine the diagnosis, not to keep needling. Needling that is not working is a signal, not a reason to buy more of it.

It is avoided or approached with particular caution in several situations: bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy, local infection or broken skin at the site, lymphoedema in the limb, a needle phobia severe enough to make you unsafe, and pregnancy. Needling near the chest wall carries a small pneumothorax risk in untrained hands, which is precisely why the certification and a full medical history matter. Give a complete history at the assessment.

No. This treats muscle. A disc problem is structural, and while muscular guarding around one is real and can be worth releasing, needling does not address the disc itself. If your presentation points to a disc or to nerve compression, the assessment should say so and the plan should reflect it — including a referral where that is the right call.

The first visit is RM300 and includes the full assessment, which establishes whether needling is appropriate at all. Soft tissue and sports massage sessions are RM98, and follow-up adjustments RM150. Where needling forms part of a longer treatment plan the plan is quoted before it starts, not billed session by session as a surprise.

Dr. Bernice Wong, who holds GEMt Trigger Point Dry Needling certification — that is the training the technique itself calls for. Separately, she graduated BSc (Hons) Chiropractic from IMU University Malaysia and practises as a chiropractor registered under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Act 2016, with a current Annual Practising Certificate; the number is on this page to be checked. Needling is never delegated to an assistant.

M
Ms. MeeraTaman Puchong Perdana2026-10-25
Hello, what is the difference in price between dry needling follow-up and just a normal massage?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-10-25
Hello Ms. Meera, the published rates are the same across both: a follow-up adjustment session is RM150, and soft tissue or sports massage is RM98. Which one you actually need depends on the assessment rather than which sounds cheaper - a trigger point locked deep under other muscle usually needs needling's reach and precision, while surface tension often responds well to the massage and manual work alone. The RM300 first visit assessment is what decides which fits your case, so you are not guessing or picking blind. Nothing here is billed as a bundled package with hidden terms. WhatsApp 601151207390 to describe your symptoms and we can guide you.

Good morning, who exactly does the needling, is it a trained doctor or just any staff?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-10-14
Good morning Mdm Yeoh, it is done by one practitioner only - Dr. Bernice Wong, who holds GEMt Trigger Point Dry Needling certification specifically for this technique, on top of her BSc (Hons) Chiropractic from IMU University Malaysia and current Basic Life Support certification. It is never delegated to an assistant or any other staff member, precisely because needling near certain areas, like the chest wall, carries real risk in untrained hands and the certification exists to manage that properly. Needles used are sterile and single-use, disposed of after each session. She is registered under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Act 2016 with a current practising certificate. Puan RosnahBandar Puteri2026-10-07
Hello, I am currently on blood thinner medication, is dry needling still safe for me?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-10-07
Hello Puan Rosnah, thank you for telling us this upfront, because it genuinely changes the plan. Dry needling is avoided or approached with particular caution for anyone on anticoagulant therapy or with a bleeding disorder, along with local infection or broken skin at the site, lymphoedema in the limb, severe needle phobia, and pregnancy. Please mention your medication clearly when you book and again at the assessment, so Dr. Bernice Wong can decide honestly whether needling is appropriate in your case or whether a different approach within the clinic's soft tissue work would be safer for you instead. We would rather be cautious than needle someone it is not right for. WhatsApp 601151207390 with your full history before booking.

Mr. LohPusat Bandar Puchong2026-10-01
Hi, my glute area sakit and pain goes down my leg, is this sciatica or can needling treat it?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-10-01
Hi Mr. Loh, that pattern - a tight spot in the glute referring pain down the back of the thigh - is genuinely one of the most common things mistaken for sciatica, because a trigger point in the deep gluteal muscles can refer exactly that way. Lumbar and gluteal tension of this kind is one of the areas needled most often at the clinic. But this needs the assessment first, because true sciatica from nerve compression is a different problem that needling does not address. The assessment establishes which one you actually have before anything proceeds, and it is included in the RM300 first visit. WhatsApp 601151207390 to describe exactly where the pain travels.

Ms. VanithaTaman Puchong Prima2026-09-26
Good morning, is this dry needling thing actually legit or just another gimmick treatment?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-09-26
Good morning Ms. Vanitha, a fair question to ask before trying anything new. Dry needling is a recognised Western musculoskeletal technique, distinct from acupuncture, aimed specifically at releasing taut bands in muscle that manual pressure alone cannot reach. At Trinity it is performed only by Dr. Bernice Wong, who holds GEMt Trigger Point Dry Needling certification on top of her BSc (Hons) Chiropractic from IMU University Malaysia and Basic Life Support certification - it is never delegated to an assistant. It also has an honest scope: it treats muscle, not discs, nerve compression or arthritis, and if your case is not muscular you will be told so rather than sold sessions anyway. WhatsApp 601151207390 to ask anything further.

En. ZairiPuchong Utama2026-09-19
Hi, does dry needling hurt a lot or ok only?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-09-19
Hi En. Zairi, most people find it far more tolerable than they expect. The needle itself is a fine filament, thinner than an injection needle, and going in is usually barely felt at all. What you do notice is the twitch response when the taut band actually releases - a brief, deep cramp lasting a second or two, which people describe as strange rather than painful. Some soreness similar to the day after a hard workout is common for about a day afterwards, and that is normal, not a bad reaction. Needles are sterile, single-use, and disposed of after your session. WhatsApp 601151207390 if you would like to ask more before booking.

Mrs. AngTaman Wawasan2026-09-14
Hello, what actually happens during the first dry needling consultation?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-09-14
Hello Mrs. Ang, the first visit starts with a proper assessment before any needle comes out - a history of the pain, palpation to locate the actual taut bands, and confirmation that what you have is muscular rather than a disc or nerve issue that needling would not touch. Only once that is established does Dr. Bernice Wong proceed with needling in that same visit if appropriate. You will feel the needle go in only faintly, then a brief deep cramp as the band releases - that twitch is the sign it is working, not a bad sign. The first visit including this assessment is RM300. WhatsApp 601151207390 to book a time that suits you.

Cik DiyanaTaman Puchong Perdana2026-09-08
Hi, do I need to bring X-ray before I can get dry needling done ah?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-09-08
Hi Cik Diyana, you do not need a fresh X-ray taken specifically for needling, but if you already have one from a hospital or clinic, please bring it along - Trinity reviews existing imaging as part of the assessment rather than sending you off for new scans on site. Since needling only addresses muscle, not disc or nerve issues, the assessment is what actually establishes whether your presentation is muscular in the first place. If it turns out not to be, you will be told that honestly rather than needled anyway. The first visit is RM300 and covers this full assessment. WhatsApp 601151207390 and let us know what you already have on hand.

Mr. SivakumarPuchong Jaya2026-09-01
Good morning, I sit at PC whole day and my shoulder always tight one side, can dry needling help?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-09-01
Good morning Mr. Sivakumar, that one-sided tightness climbing up the shoulder is exactly the picture we see most in the clinic, and the upper trapezius and levator scapulae are the most commonly needled muscles here for precisely that reason. Desk work concentrates load into that band, and by late afternoon the ache often travels up toward the base of the skull. Manual pressure and stretching help many cases, but needling adds reach for bands that surface work cannot fully release. The full assessment at your first visit, RM300, will confirm it is muscular before anything is needled. Nothing is injected - it is a fine needle only. WhatsApp 601151207390 to describe what you are feeling.

Puan Farah LiyanaBandar Kinrara2026-08-26
Hello, dry needling ni sama macam akupuntur ke?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-08-26
Hello Puan Farah Liyana, tak sama, walaupun both guna jarum yang serupa nampaknya. WhatsApp 601151207390 kalau nak tanya lanjut.

Mr. ChewBandar Puteri2026-08-21
Hi, how much is dry needling and is it sold as a package deal?
Clinical Rehab TeamCertified Practitioner2026-08-21
Hi Mr. Chew, the first visit is RM300 and includes the full assessment, which is what actually decides whether needling is appropriate for you at all. If it is, follow-up adjustments are RM150 and soft tissue or sports massage sessions are RM98. Where needling forms part of a longer treatment plan, that plan is quoted to you before it starts, not billed session by session as a surprise later. We keep pricing published and straightforward rather than wrapping it into a hard-sell package pitch. Bring whatever history or X-rays you already have to the first visit so the assessment has something to work from. WhatsApp 601151207390 if you would like to check availability first.
